The Story Behind the Nook
A genuine love of British home design, shared with the world — starting with America.
Some things are so deeply part of your life that you stop noticing them. The way a British home feels. The confidence of a well-chosen pattern. The instinct to make every room feel genuinely lived-in rather than just looked-at. Growing up surrounded by that sensibility, it becomes part of how you see the world. It wasn’t until I started sharing British home design ideas with friends in the US that I realised how much the rest of the world loves it too. And honestly, that realisation started a long conversation that never really stopped.
So The Great British Nook was born.
Where it all began
Some of my earliest and happiest memories involve a small cottage in St Ives, Cornwall. If you’ve never been, St Ives is the kind of place that gets under your skin immediately. The light is extraordinary. The sea is impossibly blue. And the cottages — all whitewashed walls and wooden shutters and windowsills full of sea glass — are some of the most beautiful small spaces I’ve ever seen.
Those holidays taught me something important about design. That a room doesn’t need to be grand to be special. It needs to feel considered. It needs to feel personal. Above all, it needs to feel like somewhere a real person actually lives and loves.
That philosophy is at the heart of everything on this site.
What we do here
At The Great British Nook, we celebrate the full spectrum of British home design. That means the grandeur of a traditional Georgian interior and the simplicity of a Scandi-influenced terrace. It means the breezy ease of coastal cottage style and the gloriously layered warmth of a boho sitting room. Furthermore, it means the timeless charm of an English country cottage in full floral bloom.
We translate all of it for American homes. Because British design sensibility — that instinct for warmth, character and rooms that improve with age — works beautifully anywhere in the world. So every product we recommend is available on Amazon and ships directly to you.
Why trust us?
Because this isn’t a database of products thrown together by an algorithm. It’s a genuine curation by someone who grew up with this stuff. Someone who knows the difference between a proper Cornish coastal palette and a generic nautical theme. Someone who understands why the British relationship with home is so special — and why Americans have been quietly falling in love with it for decades.
Above all, it’s a site built on a real and lasting love of British design. And that makes all the difference.
Come on in
Whether you’re completely new to British interior style or you’ve been quietly obsessing over it for years, you’re very welcome here. Pull up a chair. Make yourself comfortable.
After all, that’s what the British do best.
